Kirtan Cape Town

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is a heart-opening, joyful practice of devotional chanting and music that comes from the Bhakti yoga tradition of India. It involves singing sacred mantras, usually in a call-and-response style, often accompanied by traditional instruments like the harmonium, mridanga (drum), and kartals (cymbals).

Unlike a concert, kirtan is a participatory experience—everyone is invited to sing along. You don’t need to be a musician, or even know the words. The power of kirtan lies in its simplicity, community, and the deep spiritual resonance of the mantras.
